The Senior Staff break down the anatomy of a club night on this week’s episode of We Have A Technical. From format to venue to promotions to DJs to audience, what makes a club night work or fail? Plenty of discussion on that, Pharmakon, deeply obscure US EBM, and the spotted legacy of Thee Temple of Psychick Youth on the latest episode of the IDieYouDie.com podcast. I’ve had a lot of arguments in the past with DJs who definitely erred on the side of jukeboxin’ it and it’s very frustrating how obvious and circular the tactic ends up being, specifically because what it ends up circling is the drain. It tends to go like this:
we can’t play new music because our established crowd will reject it => nobody new comes to the club because we play the same stuff every week but at least we have our established crowd => our established crowd is aging out and we can’t get anybody new in the door => we can’t play new music because what’s left of our established crowd will reject it => nobody new comes to the club etc etc
It is forever frustrating to see people not be able to learn from the mistakes of others, or their own.
