Great episode! I starting Djing myself 10 years ago when I was a wee 16 year old. It’s been interesting seeing the scene change going through my young adult life and being a younger person in the club scene can definitely be interesting. When I started picking up more shows and playing local nights I was in a weird mindset of “only new music all the time, people need to be exposed all of these great new artists” but as I’ve gotten more experienced I’ve realized how important it is to cater folks with music they grew up with as well as introduce them to new stuff. It is a lot of tug of war, but also has shown me the importance of the classic acts within the scene.
love this, i have the same thoughts and feelings on DJing.
when I was doing my residency I was hellbent against some of those old mainstays while trying to develop my own, I HATED playing Rob Zombie simply because it was overplayed everywhere. mixed results at the end but that is probably par for the course, and this was years ago now.
