We’re hunting big game with this month’s commentary podcast, as we tackle the last release from one of the most infamous bands we’re ever likely to cover – Andrew Eldritch’s attempt to finally transform The Sisters Of Mercy into the machine-rock juggernaut of his dreams, Vision Thing. It’s a record with terrifying lows, dizzying highs, and creamy middles, but ultimately stands as the purest expression of Eldritch’s aesthetic fusion of sex, politics, and Americana. From Leonard Cohen-isms of varying strengths to Jim Steinman’s final contribution to the band to Eldritch’s constantly shifting relationship with his own fame, this is a jam-packed episode of We Have A Commentary you won’t want to miss! Great podcast, guys, very insightful into the psyche of Von Eldritch. I don’t think he intended “Vision Thing” to be his last album, however? I don’t buy all that Record Company bullshit. Unfortunately, I think the drugs got the better of his indisputable talent. Very sad.
Glad to see you hit this. You guys and some wonderful insights/comments. I only disagree as to the ranking in the canon, I would easily place this first or second (Floodland is always third, despite how much I loved at the time).
You did miss one on the end of the Sisters career which was the Under the Gun single (even though the greater knowledge that should probably rate as a Terri Nunn single). The b-side You Could Be the One could have warranted some commentary while you were on the topic but whatever.
Keep up the great work.
I literally cried on my bong when I heard this. Thanks for the insightful commentary on a sadly underrated album.
